Your mark will be based on the results of unit tests, quizzes, in-class assignments,
a summative assignment, and a final exam.
Marks from the various assessments will be broken down and recorded in the
following categories:
Communication (communicating reasoning orally, in writing, and graphically;
correct use of mathematical language, symbols, visuals, and conventions)
Knowledge/Understanding ( understanding of concepts; performing algorithms)
Application (applying concepts and procedures relating to familiar
and unfamiliar settings.) Thinking/Inquiry/Problem Solving (reasoning; applying the steps of
an inquiry/problem solving process (e.g. formulating questions; selecting
strategies, resources, technology, and tools; representing in mathematical
form; interpreting information and forming conclusions; reflecting on reasonableness
of results)
The mark on each report card will be the result of weighting these categories
as follows: *
Knowledge/Understanding
Thinking/Inquiry/Problem Solving
Communication
Application
40%
10%
20%
30%
For the Final Report:
The in-class summative assignment is worth 10%.
The final exam is worth 20%.
Term work is worth the remaining 70%, with the above relative weightings
*.
Homework:
The importance of regular completion of homework cannot be overemphasized.
A complete list of all homework assignments will be posted on my webpage.
Guidelines for homework:
keep homework separate from the class notes.
date, text reference, and the lesson number must be written at the
beginning of each homework assignment.
questions must be numbered as they are in the text.
only for very simple questions is it acceptable to just write down
the answer. In most instances, a full solution containing all major steps
must be shown.
answers should be verified with the back of the text.
for homework to be considered complete, an attempt on each question
must be shown at the very least.
Attendance:
If you are absent from class, you are expected to catch up what you missed
and complete any relevant homework. When you return to class, you must show
me an Absence Verification Form from your TAP teacher.
If you know in advance that you will be absent for a test, please see me
before the scheduled test date to arrange an alternate time to write it.
If you are unexpectedly absent for a valid reason on the day of a scheduled
test, please let me know why-- leave a note in my mailbox before you sign
out or phone the school and leave me a message. When you return to class,
remember to show me an Absence Verification Form from your TAP teacher.
An unjustified absence for a test will result in a mark of 0.
