In English, the following sentences are correct:

I like the book.

He likes the films.

In spanish the equivalent will be :

Me gusta el libro.

Le gustan las películas.

I like the book. ( I = subject of sentence/ like = verb / the book= direct object)

He likes the films. (He = subject of sentence / like = verb / the films = direct object )

Me gusta el libro. (Me: object / gustar= verb / el libro = subject)

Le gustan las películas. (Me: indirect object / gustar= verb / las películas = subject)

In English, it is correct to construct a sentence that has the subject "liking" a direct object. In Spanish, this never occurs.

English: I like the book
Spanish: The book is pleasing to me. (El libro me gusta. Me gusta el libro)

English: He likes the films
Spanish: The films are pleasing to him. (Me gustan las películas. Las películas me gustan)
